Wellington's Not For Me

Here's a poem I wrote a few years back.

I was born and raised in Christchurch, but moved to Wellington in the 80's, and it's fair to say it took some time to adjust to life in a completely different city.

Things changed not long after this, when I met the woman I would marry (see 'Real Friends Tell Their Friends The Truth).

Enjoy!

there’s a strong cold wind blowing
and it’s been like this for days
i comb my hair forever
but it never goes away
and the suits all push and shove me
as they yell into their phones
don’t care if they walk over you
it’s not like this at home

oh, i’m not made for wellington
and the wind straight off the sea
no, i’m not made for wellington
it’s just not meant to be
the weather sucks out all my life
peoples attitudes’ give me strife
break my ties and set me free
coz i’m not made for wellington
wellington’s not for me

the drivers push me off the road
their manners are a disgrace
foot flat on the floorboards
to win the green light race
and the checkout girls, they’re statues
though good service to them i bring
the brightest conversation
is when the register rings

no, i’m not made for wellington
nice people i never see
i’m not made for wellington
it’s just not meant to be
i feel like a stranger here
people hear what you say, but they don’t care
break my ties and set me free
coz i’m not made for wellington
wellington’s not for me
